Gallery Nev Istanbul is pleased to present “Heavy“, Canan Tolon’s 10th solo exhibition with Gallery Nev and first exhibition in Istanbul after a four-year break.
This exhibition is the reflective of Canan Tolon’s experience of working with different techniques and embodies Tolon’s various periods over 25 years. Featuring four new large-scale paintings, Tolon uses heavy equipment and materials to form the motives on the canvases. The artist experiments with the dualism of heaviness, whether it is inflicted through escapism or burdened through the lightness of being.
Since 1984, Tolon’s work has been widely featured in both solo and group presentations. Besides having had ten solo shows at Gallery Nev from 1991 to 2015, Canan Tolon’s solo shows have been exhibited in venues such as: Cité Internationale des Arts, Paris (2000); SFMoMA, San Francisco (2009); Institute for the Humanities, University of Michigan (2012) and Parasol unit foundation for contemporary art, London (2014). The artist’s work has been part of the following group exhibitions: Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco (2008); Martin Gropius Bau, Berlin (2009); National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington DC (2010); The Saatchi Gallery, London (2011); Tanas, Berlin (2011); Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam (2012); 1. International Kiev Biennial (2012) and The British Museum, London (2014).
In 2012, Art+Auction magazine named Canan Tolon amongst its “50 Next Most Collectible Artists”. Tolon’s “Futur Imparfait”, composed of 33 drawings, was added to the British Museum’s permanent collection. Canan Tolon works and lives in San Francisco Bay Area.
